Speed enforcement in the Frejus Tunnel
Sodi Scientifica installed two speed enforcement sites, fitted with the Autovelox 105SE model measurement device in the Frejus road tunnel, one of the main transalpine connections between France and Italy.
These instruments, installed in 2002, one for each direction of travel, have made a fundamental contribution to road safety along an arterial road with such high traffic volumes and prone to critical road conditions as it is a tunnel that is nearly 13 km long.
The experience gained by Sodi Scientifica in a similar project carried out for the Mont Blanc Tunnel (previous to Frejus by only a few years) has contributed to the creation of a control system that combines efficiency, technology and space optimisation (a fundamental aspect for tunnel installations).
The stations are equipped with an automatic system for the transmission of data to the Susa (TO) Traffic Police office via an optical fibre in order to avoid the need for any manual intervention on instruments by operators.
In 2016 one of the two stations was updated as, following the creation of a lay-by, it was possible to position the instrument inside an Autobox Smart model box, which simplifies the activities of support and maintenance compared to the previous wall installation, also providing greater visibility and prevention for vehicles in circulation.
Following works to double the lane in both driving directions (currently underway), it will also be possible to position an Autobox Smart in the other direction.
